10 minutes with Lauren Lancaster

I read that you studied history and archeology in college and then went on to get your masters in Shipwreck Archeology. How did you go from that to photography and how did you know that this was the career that you wanted to pursue?

I studied history and archaeology as an undergraduate and then went on to pursue an MA in nautical (shipwreck) archaeology, but I had considered pursuing photography since high school when I first started using old manual cameras. Transitioning professionally from archaeology to photography took a few years and it wasn’t until I was a student in the documentary program at the ICP that I started feeling certain that I’d made the right choice. When I tell people that I used to excavate shipwrecks they are often incredulous at my decision to choose photography over archaeology, the later sounds so exotic and the former so common.  I understand their perspective, I loved my time studying and working as an archaeologist. In the end, I guess it boils down to emotion, photography makes me happier.

You have traveled a ton for work, and also spent a few years living in Abu Dhabi. What has been one of your most eventful trips and/or favorite places to visit?

I’m asked this question all the time (especially when I am traveling) and while I have lots of stories I never have a clear answer. Everywhere I’ve been has been interesting in a different way, I’ve never been one to have favorites.

If you could go back 10 years, what advice would you give yourself?
Actually, I’m not sure I’d want to go back and give myself advice. Of course, there are countless things I could have (or should have?) done differently but looking back at this point it’s hard distinguish the good from the bad. Lots of good (or at least interesting) things have come from decisions that seemed questionable at the outset.
